On Tumblr and Yahoo

there-are-monsters-here:

There’s been a lot of hype and rage over this potential buying of Tumblr by Yahoo, and as someone pretty into the web in a business sense I thought I would chip in finally.

Firstly, I understand the fear. I understand why people are reacting so badly against it and why they’re scared of Yahoo gutting it and turning it into an overly advertised mess, or changing it to appeal to more people.

To this I feel like pointing out that as it stands, if Yahoo were to purchase tumblr they would leave it as an  independent company that happens to be owned by the Yahoo parent company. Exactly how Facebook has treated Instagram.

This doesn’t imply there will sweeping bastardisation, or that Yahoo wants to alienate those who use tumblr. After all, Tumblr must become profitable soon for it to survive and become self-sufficient, where as currently it relies almost entirely on venture capital. This needs to change, and as much as you might not want to hear it, and giant like Yahoo with a ex-Googler of 13 years as it’s CEO might just be the corporation capable of doing this.

Tumblr’s current ad-model doesn’t work. It only made $13 million last year, spending around $25 million on operating costs of the company.

Unless tumblr fixes it’s advertising model, not repeating it’s losses of $12 million last year, it will not survive. It is reported to have only a few months left of reserves to keep the company operating.

This deal looks a lot less like the idealogical war most seem to be making it, and more about the survival of the service as a whole. Something that to me seems more secure with a multi-national behind it.

Killer asteroids. Climate change. Exploding stars. These are terrifying scenarios that threaten life on Earth. But they are also opportunities. For the first time in history, we have the means to protect our home planet. We can turn these terrifying scenarios into opportunities by using space to discover new threats, develop new methods, and begin colonies to ensure the survival of humanity. We have the technology, brilliant scientists, and brave astronauts. Now we need additional funding for this exploration, research, and development.Tell Congress to double NASA’s funding, so we can use space to protect Earth.

Not gonna lie, bloomin’ loved Greece’s Eurovision entry. Even though they lie about alcohol being free.  I’m going to go listen to it again. And again. And again.

I’m horrified to learn that on many of the broadcasting channels around Europe, there were no translations of the lyrics at the bottom of the screen during the glorified drinking game known as Eurovision.

And that would explain why Greece’s gypsy punk song, which adeptly explains Greece’s economic policies, didn’t win first place

The whiskey is not to blame
The ice cubes were methylated
And our boat finally has wheels
Breathalyzer and traffic warden
Terror is not for us
The sea starts going downhill

Alcohol, alcohol, alcohol is free
Alcohol, alcohol, alcohol is free
Alcohol, alcohol, alcohol is free
Alcohol is free
Alcohol is free
